Chapter 15
Beefing It
My adult 4-H project.
Chapter 15: Clients
The little piglets would get out of the pasture and leave their momma for a little while each day.
Piglets destroyed my new landscaping, rooting for worms under the weed blocker fabric.
Our new bottle calf. I built him a warm place to stay out of the cold weather since he had no other livestock to help him stay warm.
It was frustrating to feed the calf with all of the dogs barking down the hill and my misunderstanding of his behavior when I fed him.
Ronnie makes everything look easy. But I did have to remind him that momma cows don't have udders up that high.
I took the little calf for walks daily and did my best to keep him healthy.
The first sign of a cough meant I had to give him a shot. Bottles for bottle calves should not be held or placed up high. It is easy for them to aspire milk into the lungs. Cow udders are low to the ground, so a calf must swallow lateral or at a slight incline to eat, rather than accidentally inhale milk from a high angle.
